Most people have heard of burning herbs to clear a space. But long before aromatic smoke became the go-to tool for energetic clearing, people were using something far more accessible: sound.
The practice of using noise to shift the energy of a space appears in cultures across the world and throughout recorded history. Bells, drums, clapping, chanting, and yes, banging pots and pans. The principle behind all of it is the same. Stagnant energy settles. It collects in corners, in rooms where tension has been high, in spaces where grief or illness or conflict has lived. Sound disrupts that stagnation. It moves what has become still.
You do not need special tools to do this work. What you need is intention and a willingness to look a little ridiculous.
How to Do It
Open windows and the front and back doors if it is safe to do so. Start at the back of your home or lowest level and work toward the doors and windows. This is important. You are moving energy out, not just stirring it around. Take your pots, pans, lids, wooden spoons, whatever makes good noise, and bang them together as you move through each room. Get into the corners. Energy settles there the way dust does. Be loud. Be deliberate. As you work, speak your intention aloud. It does not need to be formal. Something as simple as "this space is clear, this space is protected, only what serves us lives here" is enough.
When you reach the back or front door, open it if it is not open already. Let whatever you have moved have somewhere to go.
Finish by doing something that anchors a new energy into the space. Light a candle. Brew something fragrant. Put on music that feels like home. Sound creates vibration. Vibration is movement. Movement breaks up stagnation. This is not metaphor; it is physics applied with intention. The practice works because you are doing something real in a space you care about, with full attention on the outcome you want. That combination, physical action plus focused intention, is the foundation of nearly every energy practice across every tradition.
You do not need to belong to any particular path to do a house blessing. You just need to mean it.
**This is a GREAT way to get kids involved! they LOVE the noise!!
